Home is an essential part of our lives. Our home reflects who we are and how we connect with others while providing security and comfort. For many people with developmental disability and Autism, their home is often designed by others, leaving them little control over decisions that are core to their identity.
This webinar facilitated by Valued Lives is packed with practical information and resources to help you understand individualised living and discover what is possible.
Our speakers will discuss the individualised and innovative ways people with disability can create their own homes while getting the support they need.
You’ll hear inspirational stories from family leaders who have supported their loved one to individualised living arrangements, and have the opportunity to ask them questions.
Topics covered include:
● What does it mean to have your own home, and is it possible?
● Creating your vision of what home is
● First steps to consider when creating a home of your own
● The different home options and creative supports available
● Addressing barriers, challenges and fears
● Settling in and living in your own home
● Setting up for long-term safety and success
About the speakers
Karen Reid
Karen and her family have worked hard to give Caragh the good things in life, but when the sirens turned, she realised that in an instant this could all be lost.
“What happens if I die?” is perhaps the biggest worry for families with a son or daughter with disability. If I die is a fantasy; when I die is our shared reality but by starting early, we can safeguard the future for our loved ones with disability.
Karen and Caragh’s journey has come a long way since that trip to the emergency department.
Magdalena Garcia Flynn
Magdalena (Mags) is the Individualised Living Arrangement project lead at Valued Lives. Over the past three years, Mags and her team have supported 350 people with disability and their families seeking individualised living arrangements.
She’ll discuss her role in providing practical support and mentoring families in their journey, helping them build the capacity to set up and sustain living arrangements that aren’t group homes. As Mags says, the transition to an individualised home is a journey that’s as unique as you are.
